THE HUTT VALLEY
LOWER HUTT
Polling at Lower Hutt was not nearly as heavy as was expected, only 3249 persons recording votes out of a total on the roll of 6659. At tho election two years ago, even though there was no Mayoral contest, 3200 electors voted. The Mayoral contest proved an easy win for Mr. J. W. Andrews, who is new to municipal politics in Lower Hutt, though he has already served as a councillor in Mastcrton. Two factors told against Mr. A. Mcßain, who has twelve years' service as a councillor. He is not a ratepayer, and he suffered a severe .illness about a year ago. Mr. J. B. Young Stood as the official "workers'" candidate, and Mr. A. Avery as an independent "workers'"| candidate. Though Mr. Mcßain -was defeated, the ticket which supported him was almost entirely successful, tho unsuccessful candidate being Mr. M. Thessman, whose place was taken by Mr. C. J. Ashton, a supporter of Mr. Andrews. Mr. W. T. Strand, one of the sitting members of tho Gas Lighting Board, was defeated, his place being taken by Mr. D. S. Campbell, who is quite new to local body affairs. ' ■ The following are tho results of the voting:— MAYOR. Andrews, J. W 10(13 Mcßain; A 863 Young, J.
