LATE SIR, A. GRAY, X.C

RETURNED MEN'S TRIBUTE

A tribute to tho work of the late Sir Alexander Gray, K.C., in tho interests of returned soldiers was paid at the meeting of tho executive of the' Wellington Kcturned Soldiers' Association last evening. "It is my sad duty this evening to j ask you to pas 3 a motion of condolence ■ with Lady Gray and her family in tho, loss they havo sustained by the passing' of Sir Alexander Gray, K.C., who is; an honorary member of this associa- ■ tiori," said the ' chairman (Col. A. i Cowles). "In and after 1917 many1 wounded and sick soldiers were return-j ing to New Zealand from theatres of '■ war overseas and passing through Wcl-1 lington. It was decided to institute ■ a club to accommodate these men, to , afford facilities for them, and to obtain and use information which would enable them to return to civil life.' The need and benefits of the £lub were beyond question, especially after the Armistice, when thousands of soldiers passed through this city. Sir A Wander Gray gave yeoman service to tho club, and his untiring work in the interests of returning men was an inspiration to all who were associated with him. In his unselfish and noble work Lady Graygave unremitting assistance. Both Sir Alexander and Lady Gray continued in their work for returned soldiers. Last Poppy Day tho latter took an active and successful part in selling poppies, and the last; appearanco of Sir Alexander Gray in public was his attendance' at the ,next-of-kin service at the Town Hall on Anzae Day. I will ask you to rise and stand in silence as a tribute to tho memory of a faithful friend of the returned soldiers." The following motion was carried:— "That this executive of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association record its grateful appreciation of tho unselfish assistance and the wise guidance of its late hou. member Kir Alexander Gray, K.C., and its sincere sympathy with Lndy Gray and her family in the loss they have sustained."
