TROPHIES'PRESENTED
Life-saving and swimming awards for the 1932-33 season, won by Scots College pupils, were presented to them in the assembly room at the college this nlternoou. The proceedings opened with the singing of the school song, and the gathering was concluded with a service conducted by the Key. I). M. Hemis, ii.A., ciiaplaiu to the college. inr. b'. Chapman, chairman of the Wellington Centre of the Koyal Liic-duviug [society, presented the life-saving awards; Mr. A. McCartney, chairman ot the. Weir liugtou Centre,-Amateur Swimming' Association, the distance swimming certuiuales; and Mr. P. C. \v'att, vice-chairman, Scots College Board of Governors, the trophies and certificates won at the college annual sports. Addressing the assembly, Mr. J. R. Sutclitte, tne principal, aaicl that, the custom' of presenting the swimming ami lii'e-savirig awards at the end of the first term was1 inaugurated last year. The past season had been the most successlul experienced by the school. In tlie primary competitions the school won the Duthie •Cup for the second year in succession, and the Shields Memorial Trophy, and gained second place in the Mrs. Shields .Life-Saving .Trophy event. Turner won the Wellington schoolboy championship, under 14 years, and the school won the iuterprimaiy school championship. The boys. of the secondary department were represented in the Maxwell Trophy event and gained second place. An innovation was the marathon swim in which boys were encouraged to Bwim three milec in short stages. Twenty-two boys gained the certificate. The 38 life-saving awards gained included four, silver medallions, eight bronze medallions, thirteen intermediate certificates, and thorteeii elementary certificates. Sixty-four boys qualified for the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association's certificates as follows:— Twenty-seven certificates of merit, 21 proficiency certificates, 16 learners' certificates. Mr. Sutcliffe said he wished to record his gratitude to Mr. F. Chapman and Mr. C. Meachen, chairman and secretary respectively of the Wellington Centre' of the Royal Life-Saving Society,' and to Mr. N.. McCartney, chairman of the Wellington Centre of the Amateur Swimming Association, for their attendance. He trusted, they would convey to their associations the school's thanks for the help and guidance always so freely accorded and for which it was extremely grateful.
