LAST WEEK'S GAMES
GOOD FORM SHOWN
HAEREMAI'S WIN
There was good scoring in all the senior A matches last Saturday, when the first games in the Wellington Basketball Association's competitions were played. Hacremni, the now senior: A team distinguished themselves by i putting up the largest score of the day in their match with Awatea. The latter club is finding difficulty in getting members for its senior A team, and the fact that the majority of players on Saturday were playing together for the first time, materially affected their style. G. Patrick, Hacreinai forward, was responsible for some excellent scoring, her iicld work and shooting being excellent. It will be interesting to see if Hacreinai' can reproduce Saturday's form when up against stronger opposition. The score was I llaeremai, 28, Awatea C. Miss Bell ref creed/ I Wellington East O.G. I had no diffi- ! eulty in piercing Waac's defence, and ! won* by 20 goals to 7. The losers were i quick and active, but lacking the team combination of their opponents, wens unable to gain from their attacking movements. E. Parsons was again to ' the fore in the college defence. Her | method of playing, the ball instead of I the player enabled her to intercept cleanly. Miss Armstrong was in charge of the game. After a close first half in which both teams scored 8 goals, Kia Ora, by improved passing and shooting, succeeded in defeating technical College O.G. by 22 goals to 15. Play was fast and even throughout, the score see-sawing up till' half-time. In the second spell, G. McGurk played defence, and good work by M. Blake and D.McMahon kept the Technical forwards in check. E. McGuire, Kia Ora forward, sustained a slight injury a few minutes before time was called and had to retire. M. Schaab was the most consistent player in the Technical forwards. Miss Bell controlled the game. The University-Wesley match was a struggle from start to finish, the final score being Wesley 14, University 12. Up till half-time, University had the advantage in active scoring, although their team play was not quite as fast as that of Wesley's, who gave a spirited display right through, The University forward third lacked cohesion, with the result that their passing suffered by interception. M. Line gave her usual reliable performance, and the inclusion of C. Turner (Auckland) in the defence third was a great advantage. Wesley fielded some promising players, but many of them have not yet realised that'some restraint in the expenditure of energy is necessary in basketball. Miss Armstrong refereed. Executive Meeting. Tho fortnightly meeting of the executive of the.Wellington.. Basketball Association was held.; tiiis" week, Miss M.-.'E. Armstrong presiding over a good attendance of members. Thoso present were Mesdames H. D. Muir, E. M. Smith, A. Muir, Misses J. Wilson, M. Cheeseman, 0. Lawlor, M. Line, E. Bell, L, Sturrock, Q. McLean, and O. Whartojtevv-.aiho ;,suggestion ;■ that Mr. Dallaston 'be appointed with regard to the formation of a North Wellington sub-association was discussed, and it was decided that a deputation from the northern district be asked to attend the next meeting of the executive to discuss the question. The secretary reported that owing to the fact that the South Wellington School courts were not nii.rked out for last Saturday, the matches set down for thoso courts had to be postponed. It was decided to write to the School Committee and ascertain if the courts would be ready for next Saturday. Complaints regarding the small stones on Newtown courts were received. It was stated that several accidents had resulted from tho cause on Saturday. It was also brought under the notice of the executive that petty thieving was taking place at this court. A warning to players not to leave money lying about was issued. An invitation, from Taranaki for a team to tour that district was received. It was decided to hold the matter over until a later date. The treasurer reported that so far no fees had been received, and drew attention to the fact that only players whose fees were received in the first
"Ping" half of May were entitled to any reduction. Saturday's Games. All senior A matches at Newtown this week should prove interesting to watch, liaorem.'ii, encouraged by their win last week can be expected to extend Kia Ora, who should, nevertheless, bo a strong side to defeat. Wesley, after their meritorious win against University, will be very keen too add another to their credit, and Technical College O.G. will need to be in form to prevent them from doing so. The match of the day should be the one between University and Wellington East I, 1932 runnersup and champions respectively. With good defence and centres on both sides, the result will largely depend on which team has the best forwards,, and University's forwards will need to improve on last week's showing to hold their own against those of Wellington East I. Tho second new team in the senior A grade, Wellington East 11, will make their debut against Waacs, and from appearances they should prove a keen and willing nine. Waacs is another team badly in need of a scoring third.
