RIVAL TO POMPEII
An Egyptian rival to Pompeii is likely jto result from this season's excavation work by Dr. Samy Gabr, an Egyptian University expert, on the west of the ancient city of Hermopolis (states the "Daily Mail"). Dr. Gabr has unearthed whole streets with, buildings on both sides and temples of the period from the first century B.C. to the second century A.D. There are pillared houses in stone- and brick, some of them two storeys high. Their interiors are decorated with beautiful paintings in a remarkablo state of preservation. These show a wonderful knowledge of light and shade and perspective. The subjects include the carrying off of Persephone by Pluto. One Greek inscription relates that the owner of the house was interested in horse-breeding and had won a number of races. Coins of the age.of Nero (A.D. 37 to 68) were also found in the houses. They contain only 30 per cent, of gold. One of the temples is Greek, while the other is a magnificent Graeco-Bgyptian building. The former has an altar in front which is almost intact.
