He has been in New Zealand for a year on work connected with the Dominican order. ■Bishop Liston, of Auckland, will attent the opening of the Mar'ist Brothers' novitiate at Claremont, Tiniaru, on Sunday. Tho Rev. Father M. J.O'Neil, priest in charge of the social work of tha Roman Catholic dioceso of Auckland, and the Rev. Father J. J. Kelly, parish priest at Helensville, left by the Niagara for Sydney en routo to Ireland. They will be absent about pis months. . Captain C. M. Renaut, superintendent of mercantile marine at Lyttelton, has returned to Christchurch from a holiday in tho North Island. . Mr. L. J. Schmitt, the New Zealand Trade and Tourist Commissiorier in Sydney, has been, spending a few days ia the Southern Lakes district. ; ' A well-known Auckland resident, Mr. Victor Cornaga, aen., died at Cambridge on. April 12, aged 77 years. His health had been failing: for the past few months. Mr. Cornaga, was bora in Liverpool, England, and came out to New Zealand about fifty-five years.ago, landing at Auckland, where he spent his early years in this country, being married in. Auckland about fortyeight years ago. A well-known business man, Mr. Cornaga left Auckland in 1900, when he purchased the Masonis Hotel. He had maintained an interest in the hotel up to the time of his death. After being in Cambridge a number of years he went back to Auckr land but returned to Cambridge a few months ago. The deceased was an official member of many sporting and kindred bodies, and he was always generous with his assistance. He was also. a very old member of the Druids' Lodge. The late Mr. Cornaga is survived by his widow, three sons (Messrs, V. J. Cornaga,- Wellington, A. E. Cornaga, Cambridge, L. A. Cornaga, Christchurch), and one "daughter (Mrs. E. P. Clatworthy, Auckland). Mr. J. W. McEwan, who has represented the Hutt and Makara counties and suburban boroughs on the Wellington Harbour- Board for the past twenty-five years, announced his retirement from that position at. last" night's meeting of the board. For.a period of two years during his term of service Mr. McEwan was chairman of the board. In a-/farewell speech Mr. MeEwan complimented the board on its general efficiency, and expressed tha hope that nothing would intervene to change the "board's policy. The board, he said, undoubtedly stood high in its relative position with other public bodies of the Dominion. He regretted that Ms term of service had come to an end, but he would always look back with pleasure to the time he had spent as a member of the board. The chairman (Mr. C. J. B. Norwood) depressed the board's appreciation of- tha splendid service performed by Mr. McEwan during his long term of service. It was by men like Mr. McEwan and others- who had carried on the work before .him that a policy had been laid down that meant so much to the board today.
