STORY OF THE WEST
UNJUST TREATMENT
(Received April 11, 1.30 p.m.) MONTREAL, April 10. The decision of the, voters of Western Australia to secede from the Commonwealth will be yery difficult to carryout, now that the finances of the States aro so '■interwoven,' said Sir Newton Moore in an interview here. "The promise of Mi\ Lyons to hold a convention to examine the difficulties of the position with a view to adjusting anomalies that undoubtedly, exist, seems to me a practical way of securing relief. Western Australia, nas been a very heavy per capita contributor to bonusing industries which have been no benefit to her and she has justifiable grievances. The: Commonwealth1 was created by six Sovereign States in order to secure a universal system of defence, Post and Telegraphs, and a single Customs tariff , with interstato ■free tvade. Western Australia, in view of the fact that she had only-some ten years before received , responsible government and not had time to establish her secondary industries, was allowed to retain, protection against the other States for five years, reducing the interstato tariff by 20 per cent, yearly, but1 five years in the history of a nation does not allow much. time i establish . industries, and there has always been a feeling, that Western Australia has becui a dumping ground for manufacturers of the Eastern States.'.' -.' . : / V .
