" PROTOCOLS" FORGERY

A FANTASTIC PLOT

The campaign in Germany against the Jews serves to recall the attempt made in 1920 to stir up a world-wide campaign against Jewry and Judaism as a danger to Christian civilisation. The ascendancy of men of Jewish blood in the Bolshevik revolution, in Russia and in the subsequent Soviet Government; in the unsuccessful Spartacist revolution' in Germany to overthrow the Republican Government of that country, and in tho temporarily successful Communist revolution in Hungary, which established Soviet rule for a few wcoks, and carried out a ruthless policy of murder, outrage, and destruction, had greatly alarmed public sentiment in, European countries, and had Tevived antagonism to the Jews, states the Melbourne "Ago." The Russian Bolsheviks loudly proclaimed their intention of sowing the seeds of revolution, throughout the .world, of overthrowing the existing forms of government in civilised countries and establishing a world-wide dictation of the proletariate Tho Russian Soviet Government spent a large amount of the gold it had stolen from Russian banks in stimulating political unrest in European countries and in spreading industrial unrest among the working classes. . Theso ■ facts, combined with the oftproclaimed Jewish . peril which was supposed to exist in the fact that Jewish financiers throughout, the civilised world had exercised for years past by< means of their money power rt considerable influence on international relations, gave support to a remarkablo theory that the Jews throughout the. ; : world were aiming at tho overthrow of Christian civilisation- and the establishment in its place of a universal Jewish dominion, under the kingship of a member of tho House of David. According to this theory, all the political and industrial unrest which was then in evidenco in various; countries throughout the .world Tyas the work of the hidden hand of Jewry. Trade unionism, Socialism, syndicalism, Bolshevism, Indian and Egyptian nationalism, were some of the means by which Jews were supposed to be working for tho overthrow of tho British Empire, lv other civilised countries social and political grievances were said by the anti-Semites to be exploited for similar destructive purposes. The, disco very of the existence of this Avorld-wide plot was new, but, according to the discoverers, the plot itself was centuries old. According to- them, Jews were the instigators of tho French Revolution of 1789, and of every other revolution, great and small, that, had taken place in Europe for •hundreds of years. In England the chief mouthpiece of the campaign against the Jews wsfc the "Morning Post," the oldest newspaper iii London, and the most conservative lit its^political policy. In an introduction to a book entitled "The Cause of World Unrest," a book composed chief - ]y of anti-Jewish contributions to the columns of tho "Morning Post," the editor of that paper wrote: —"Anybody who Teads the story of this subterranean scheming, as it is unfolded: in. this book, may perhaps be disinclined ■'to admit the correctness of the authors' , statements,, because of the startling conclusion to which they lead up. But 1 would urge the; render to east aside all prejudices and judge the'facts brought out on their merits as facts, and provide, if he can, other solutions. Tho main outline of the contents of this book is, in brief, that there has been for centuries a hidden •conspiracy, chiefly Jewish, whose objects have been,' and are, to produce revolution. Communism and anarchy, by means of which hope to'arrive at the hegemony of the world, by establishing some sort of despotic rule. The 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion,' which have been published in England, have aroused tremendous interest and a storm of protest. It will be noted by the reader that the authors of this book have taken care not to assume the authenticity of ihe 'Protocols.' They .may or may not %c genuine. Their chief interest lies in the. fact that while the book that contains them was published in 1905 the Jewish Bolsheviks.today are carrying Out almost to the letter the programme outlined in the 'Proctocols.'" THE PLAN OF THE "PROTOCOLS." •It was* in the "Proctocols of the Elders of Zion" that the belief in a Jewish plot to' overthrow Christian civilisation had its chief f oundatipn. In OTder to expose the plot to the civilised,world the "Protocols" were published during 1920-21 in almost every Christian country. They were imblished in England in 1920 by a highly reputable firm under the title c£ "The Jewish Peril." These "Protocols" purported to be the minutes of meetings of a secret directory of the Jewish people, which wero held in Paris towards the end of last century. They revealed to those who believed in their genuineness that for centuries ~past there had been in existence a powerful secret international, political organisation of Jews, actuated by undying hatred of the Christian world, and by a determination to overthrow it, and replace it with Jewish world domination. Destruction of the' existing order was to bo accomplished by successive waves of disrupted political and social forces, such as Liberalism, radicalism, syndicalism, Communism, and, finally, anarchy. In tho meantimo Jewry was to retain its cohesion and hold itself aloof from these distintegrating, disruptive ideas, so that when a state of wor-ld-widc anarchy was reached it would be comparatively easy to establish Jewish dominion of the world under tho, logical and wise, but stern and pitiless sovereignty of "the King of the Seed of David," in response to tho despairing appeal of distracted humanity. . FANTASTIC ABSURDITY. Educated Jewish opinion throughout the world denounced the "Protocols of tho Elders of Zion" as a clumsy forgery. It was vigorously denied by orthodox Jews, holding prominent positions in civilised ■countries, that there existed any secret international political organisation of the Jews. It was strenuously proclaimed that the idea of a Jewish plot to overthrow Christian civilisation in order to -establish world domination under a Jewish king was a fantastic absurdity. But despite tho fact tfiat many keen Jewish minds were employed in the task of searching for proof that the "Protocols" were a forgery, the discovery was eventually made accidentally by a man who was not a Jew. . The "Protocols" were first published in Russia in 1905, being embodied in a book entitled "The Great Within the Small," which was written by Professor. Sergei Nilus, who occupied a minor post in the Russian Department of Foreign Relations. The book attracted very little attention in European countries, except Russia, where the "Protocols" Were- ■ used by the Conservr.tives to obstruct the demands of social reforms that wero being- made through the Duma and the Liberal newspapers. In January, 1017, while the war was in progress, and two months before the first revolt in Russia which overthrow tho Tsarist Government. Professor Nilus published anothor warning against tho Jewish peril. His ■ccond book was entitled "It Is Here At Our Doors," and in it he again printed tho "Protocols," as evidence of

a Jewish plot against civilisation, and I particularly against the existing order of things in Russia. It was after tho war had ended, and Communism had become triumphant in Russia and had. spread to other countries, that the "Protocols" began to attract attention, and as already stated, they wero published during 1920-21 in almost every Christian country. FORGBRY EXPOSED. Professor Nilus gave at different times contradictory explanations of how he obtained a manuscript copy of such an important and secret document as the "Protocols." 'The most interesting and least reliable of these explanations was that it was given to him by a woman who stole it from one of tho most influential and most highly initiated leaders of Freemasonry, at the close of a secret meeting of tho initiated in France, that nest of Jewish .conspiracy. , • The revelation that the "Protocols" were a forgery was made public in the London "Times" of August 16, 1921. A Russian land owner with English connections, who had sought safety in flight from Russia to Constantinople after the failure of General Wrangel's campaign against the Red Army of tho Bolsheviks, handed to tho Constantinople correspondent of "The Times" a small volume which ho had bought, among a number of old books, from a former officer of the Russian political police.. He asked'the correspondent to compare it with the "Protocols." The book was a thinly disguised attack on the despotism of Napoleon 111 in the form of twenty-five dialogues bdtween the spirits of Machiavelli and Montesquieu, who met on a desolute beach in the world of shades. It was written in French, and published, in Brussels in 1865. In these dialogues Machiavelli, whom the author intended to bo. regarded as speaking on behalf of Napoleon 111, justified the tortuous teachings of his famous book "The Prince," and explained tho applicability ,of the principles set forth" in that book to the condition of Eurox>ean States in 1864 —the time when the dialogues took place." Machiavelli described at length .how he would solve the problem of stabilising political States "incessantly disturbed by the spirit of anarchy and revolution." Research showed that the author of these "Dialogues" was Maurice Joly, a lawyer in Paris, who was eventually arrested by the police of Napoleon 111, and was scntencod to eighteen months' imprisonment. Comparison of the "Protocols" with the "Dialogues" showed that the former was-a close plagiarism, of the older book. The ideas set forth in the "Dialogues" were slavishly echoed in the "Protocols," and the phrasing was also closely copied. Over fifty of the paragraphs in the "Protocols" were merely paraphrases of passages in the "Dialogues.". It is assumed that the person responsible for the plagiarising was an official of the Russian political police. He gave Machiavelli's theories for dealing with States "incessantly disturbed by the spirit of anarchy and revolution" a Jewish setting, as the policy of a secret Jewish organisation for the overthrow of Christian civilisation. And tho plagiarist's manuscript was handed to Professor Nilus with an air of mystery for the purpose of deluding him with the idea that it, was a document of the greatest importance which had been stolen from the headquarters of-tho Jewish conspiracy;, The original purpose of the "Protocols" when published-in Russia by Professor Nilus, virtually at the dictation of his official superiors, was to foster the belief among Russian conservatives, and especially in court circles, that tho prime cause of discontent among the politically minded elements in Russia was not the repressive policy of. tho. bureaucracy, but a world-wide Jewish conspiracy. , ' ■ -; ■ ■ • ■ ';■ The discovery that the "Protocols" were a forgery demolished the fantastic idea/that the Jews throughout the world arc bound together in a conspiracy to overthrow .Christian civilisation. But in England there are some fanatical anti-Semites who believe that the Bolshevik plot against civilisation—a plot which is by no means a secret one, but has been openly proclaimed by the Bolsheviks—is essentially a Jewish con- j spiracy for the destruction of the British Empire: They can, be left to argue the matter out with those other British patriots who believe that the British race are the lost ten tribes of Israel.
