THE RIGHT TO RELIEF
(to the Editor.) Sir.—l was pleased to see that the '"NtHy Zealand Herald" (Auckland) had editorially taken exception to the system adopted in New Zealand whereby a man with a few hundred pounds between him and starvation and his -old age is refused the right to relief work when unemployed. Why should it be necessary to insist on n middle-aged man, who lias been thrifty and saved a little, and who is unfortunately unemployed and not earning, spending all his savings to live. Would it not bo better' to base the right to relief work on the income derived from savings and investments. Why impoverish a family because the breadwinner is a victim ot the slump? I would like to sec'the Press take this question up aiid point out the unfairness of the present system. With the valuable assistance of the Press, I believe the matter could be righted- and n senso of justice be made to prevail.— Iam 'etC-' ; .' EQUITY.
