MARINE DRIVE FOOTPATH
When the Marino Drive, between Lyall and Island Bays, was widened, straightened in parts, and paved with bitumen, no provision was made for pedestrians: they had their choice of H-alking on tliel bitumen or not woiking. The result, was -that this section of the drive, at one time probably the most popular suburban walk about ■Wellington, was little used by strollers. Many complaints were made by and for pedestrians, but without much result. Now a start has been made in the building of a rough path on the Beaward side of the roadway, as a relief work. It is unfortunate that the rule which discourages tho use of material on such works will apply in this case, for clay and broken rock do not give a surface sufficiently attractive either to induce walkers to get off the bitumen or to invite others who do not tackle tho walk because of motor traffic dangers. Where there are obstacles to inexpensive construction, gaps will probably be left in tho pathway, but at any rate it is a start, and some day there may bo funds for surfacing. Without such finishing off the path will be of little value—weed patches not being accounted material assets— but under tho system and rules of relief work finance tho engineers cannot do much more.
