DECREASES SHOWN

Considerable decreases in the number of criminal and civil cases dealt with, at the Magistrate's Court during the quarter ending March 31 are shown when the latest tlgiires are compared with those for the corresponding period o£ last year. There is a decrease of 24 per cent, in the number o£ cririiinal cases against men, but this is counterbalanced by an increase of 28 per cent, in the number of cases against women. The decrease, in the total number o£ criminal cases against men and women is 22 per cent. There is a drop of 247 in the number of civil cases tried, and a corresponding drop in the amount o£ money collected as civil Court costs. Notwithstanding the decrease in the number'of civil cases, the Court has been kept unusually busy during the quarter owing to the fact that there has been an increase in the total number of cases that have come before a Migistrate p for consideration. Owing to the operation of the Mortgagors' Relief Act, and other recent legislation affecting apprentices, there has been a considerable increase in the number-of applications heard in chambers, the total for this quarter being 608 as compared with 491 for the same period last year. The number of judgment summonses issued has decreased by 121, distress warrants by 00, and warrants of committal by 18. The following are the figures for the quarter, those for the corresponding quarter of 1932 being given in parentheses: — Number of criminal cases: Against males, 1206 (1665); against females, 153 (110). Total, 1409 (1784). Number of civil cases tried, 1300 (163/); total amount claimed, £22,051 6s 8d (£25.173 7s 9d); total amount recovered, £15,774 11s lid (£25,434 10s 7d). Distress warrants issued, 330 f426); judgment summonses issued, 380 (501); warrants of committal issued, 45 (03). Fees and fines: Civil Court costs, £2440 7s (£2983 7s Od); criminal Court costs, £296 15s (£352 3s 6d); lines, £844 Is lOd (£llO6 9s 2d); licensing fees, £12 12s (£7 0s).
