UNEMPLOYMENT BELIEF
DISCUSSIONS WITH CABINET
Measures for dealing with flic unemployment problem during the coming winter months will bo considered by members of the Unemployment Board and Cabinet shortly. Last session, the Prime Minister (the Et. Hon. G. AY. Forbes) stated in the House of Representatives that' during the recess he would arrange for round-the-table discussions between Cabinet and the Board, and these discussions aro likely to commence in the very near future.
Tho board is well acquainted with the difficulties which confront it during the coining winter, but it is hopeful that it will bo able to meet the position with the, funds at present at/ its disposal. It was authoritatively ascertained, today that tho Government is anxious to avoid placing any extra burden on the taxpayers for the purpose of unemployment relief. The view is held that the people are already contributing as (much as they can be reasonably expected to do, and that it will be necessary for the board to live within its present income. The Consolidated Fund, already sorely pressed, is not likely to be asked to make any further contribution to unemployment relief. It is understood that the Minister of Employment and the members of the Unemployment Board have already formulated several proposals, and these will be discussed with Cabinet.
