CIVIC ORCHESTRA
FURTHER CONSIDERATION
The proposal for an amalgamation of certain musical bodies in the city, with the object of forming a civic orchestra, which was put forward last month by Mr. H. H. Tombs, has been further considered.
The proposal originally came before a meeting over which the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, presided.- The outcome of the meeting was that a committee was appointed to look into the scheme, and consult with' any bodies concerned.
That committee met last week. Dri H. E. Gibbs presided, and. there 'were present Dr. D. Macdonald Wilson, Messrs. R. A. Glen, Ernest Dawson, and 11. H. Tombs. The amalgamation scheme itself did not come in for any special consideration from the committee, but the status of the Wellington Symphony Orchestra and the Wellington Philharmonic Orchestra was considered. Finally it was decided that Sir. Tombs should ventilate his ideas beforo the executive of tho Wellington Symphony Orchestra, and the Broadcasting Board (or its musical deputies), with the viow of getting opinions on tho proposal.
As the president of the "Wellington Symphony Orchestra, Mr. D.' A. Ewan, is at present in Australia, the executive will not hear Mr. Tombs until his return to Wellington after Easter.
