ANTARCTIC FLIGHT

ELLSWORTH EXPEDITION

WILKINS STATES OBJECT

NEW YORK, April 4. Sir Hubert Wilkinsj, addressing a luncheon gathering of the Western Universities Club today, revealed some plans for tho Ellsworth Antarctic ox-' pedition, which he will accompany as a correspondent. Ho will sail for Nor-^ way next Tuesday.'

Tho expedition's ship is scheduled to proceed from there about August 1 for New Zealand, thenco to leave'for the base at tho Bay of Whales about November 1. It will arrive at the base about December 15.'

The personnel, including Sir Hubert Wilkins, Mr. Ellsworth, and Mr. Bernt Balehen, will consist of but fifteen men, the_ smallest number ever to make such a journey. .Only one aeroplane wil be taken for the flight across the Ross Sea.

Sir Hubert reiterated that the object of the expedition was a "flight of discovery." He hopes it will determine if the Ross Sea flows to the South Atlantic, or if it is terminated by a mountain range after about 500 miles.

The aeroplane- will be equipped with specially-designed skis, and will have a maximum speed of 200 miles an hour. It is hoped to complete the 3000-mile trip over the, sea and return in twenty hours.

An automatic camera attached to the plane will take photographs during, the trip at the rate of one every six seconds.
