FRUIT EXPORT FIGURES THE YEAR'S RIFLEMEN

(Special to "The Evening Post.") ', ■ NELSON,.i April ■4. Seasonal work in the Nelson'district is now tapering off. Hoprpieking has been completed, and the harvesting of the tobacco crops has* almost come to an end, while a number of apple orchards r have completed their export season. However, the handling of later variety apples such'as the stunner will continue ■ till the end of this month. Fruit exported from the Nelson, district this season up to the end of March totalled 536,000 cases, compared with 556,770 eases up to April 2 last year. .. ', ■ . ■ ; Radio licences issued up to March 31 in Nelson total 980, an increase of 280 on last year's figures. The figures are for the city area only; the number of licences issued in tho outside districts iii not yet available. During March 28 births, 17 deaths, and 8 marriages were registered at Nelson. The figures for the corresponding month of last year were 30, 10, and 14. For the first quarter of the year the figures are: Births 85, deaths, 38, marriages 17. Last year's figures were 83, 43, and 36. Tho Nelson Girls' Collego Jubilee takes place at Easter. The council of governors, to commemorate the occasion, have decided to make available an annual Jubilee Scholarship of £8. Miss Ethel M. Christie has been appointed assistant mistress in the Girls' College preparatory department. She is an old girl of the college. Tho: Rev. B. O. Plumb, having been appointed assistant-curate at Nelson Cathedral, the Rev. R. W. "W- Alexander has been appointed acting-vicar .of Murchison. The Nelson Automobile Association haa decided to make immediato application to have tho unemployment camp on the Rai Saddle removed to the Collins Valley. The unemployed have made a great improvement to '/ie road and corners on the saddle, and tho association is anxious that improvement work1 should1 be carried on in the Collins Valley, between the Wangamoa Hill and Rai Valley, as that stretch is now considered the most dangerous between Nelson and Christchurch. The final shoot for tho Nelson Defenco Riflo Club's championship saw B. B. Jones aun out the winner. The holder of the title last season was F. Sharland, and up to Saturday's shoot, after dropping two shoots of the seven fired, there was not much difference between • the five competitors, S. A. Barnett leading with 1 point, 488, B. B. Jones 487, W. A. Kenning 486, F. Sharland 484, and T. Carter 482. Considering tho way tho leading men have bocn shooting, it was an interesting competition, and the last two or three shots at 600 yards by Jones wore watched with interest, his final 4 and 5 putting him .ahead by -2 points. Manssen, with 223, had a 1 lead of 1 point on Barnett, but Barnett with a 31 against Mansson's 29 reversed the position, winning the trophy with an aggregate of 253, Mans-, son runner-up with 252. The scores of those completing tho scries are: S. A. Barnett 253, N. Manssen 252, W. A. Kenning 250, B; .3.. Jpnes 246, F. Sharland 245, T. Gore 242, P. F. Burn 242, T. Carter 241, 3. C. Russ-ell 238, L. Dixon 237, R. Kenning 223. A special dedication service was held by the Nelson branch of the Toe H when the Lamp was formally/bestowed on the unit. At the Toe. H'Birthday Festival held on the day the Nelson Cathedral was dedicated 'a lamp was lit by his Excellency, -the GovernorGeneral Lord Bledisloc. Tho lamp on that occasion was lent specially for the ceremony, and the Nelson lamp was lit by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales at Birmingham the same evening. Since then the Nelson Lamp has reached New Zealand. The lamp, is dedicated to the memory of Major James Houlker, who died of wounds received at Gallipoli.
