MARKING OF MEAT

TESTS AT SMITHFIELD

OPPONENTS UNCONVINCED

(Received March 24, 1 p.m.)

LONDON, March 23.

In order to test the opinion of Australian and other opponents to-meat marking an interesting experiment was tried. Committeemen today saw at Smithfield several frozen carcasses which were marked in ink two months ago and taken from cold storage on Monday. The marking proved excellent. There was no disfigurement of the remainder of the carcassj but Australian experts point out that the weather .since Monday has been cool and dry favouring the experiment, while they consider it unlikely that such results could be obtained if applied commercially ou a large scale.
