STRONG WINDS

SOUTHERLY CHANGE SOON

Strong northerly winds are likely to reach gale force in places. But in far southern districts winds will be backing to the south-west, and a; southerly change is likely to extend over the Dominion within 24 to 36 hours. The weather in western and, southern districts of tho South Island is forecasted to be unsettled with rain.'Some heavy falls, with flooding of rivers, are likely on the West Coast. . In other districts the weather at first should/be fair to fine, but the rain will gradually extend to western districts in other parts of the Dominion. Temperatures will be mild. •

Since last night 'there has been a rapid change in pressure' distribution. The anticyclone has passed away eastward and a rather intense westerly is advancing over the South Island. The pressure gradient is extremely steep from Cook Strait southward, hence north-westerly winds have beconio strong and squally over that area. It has rained in parts of Westland and Otago, and a few misty showers have also fallen in the Auckland district. Generally, however, fine weather has continued to prevail in most districts, with higher temperatures than of late.

All the main centres experienced another fine day yesterday. ■It was cloudy in Christchurch, but' Auckland, Wellington, and Duncdin had continuous' sunshine,, over 11 hours of bright sunshine bring recorded in Wellington.
