EASTBOURNE TRAFFIC

The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. S. F. Fisher) presided, and there were also present Councillors E. N. Battersby, Margaret Magill, A. Varney, W. F. Hornig, A. Walker, C. A. Rendle, and E. W.'Wise.

In connection with the Easter Fair, it was decided to reduce the adult return fare on the ferries.

A letter was received from the Eastbourne Rugby Club expressing appreciation of services and concessions given by the council. The club was granted the use of the gymnasium from March 28.

The, Mayor was • appointed to represent the council at a meeting of relief organisations which will be convened by the Smith Family on Tuesday next.

Permits for two buildings of a total value of £560 were issued in February.

The sanitary inspector reported that no eases of infectious disease were notified in February.

Traffic returns for February, with figures for February, 1932, in parentheses, were presented as follows: —T.S.S. Muritai: Passengers carried, 23,926 (31,041); number of round trips, 43 (52); total distance steamer, 645 miles (780); oil fuel used, 23.5 tons (27). S.S. Cobar: Passengers carried, 10.950 (16,142); number of round ,trips, 144 (139); total distance steamed, 2160 miles (2080); coal used, 61 tons (61). During the month the buses covered 16,672 miles, and used 1783 gallons of benzine. Concerning the water and drainage operations in the borough, the Town Clerk (Mr. C. L. Bishop), in his February report, said that approximately 400 properties had now been connected with the water supply, and further applications for permits to connect were being steadily received. Fairly good progress appeared to have been made with the sewerage works during the past month. To the end of February, said Mr. Bishop, approximately £8100, representing about 80 per cent, of the total rates struck, had been collected, together with £1000 in arrears. In February the bus revenue was £90 lower than that for the corresponding month last year, making the total revenue for the eleven months about £1900 less than the corresponding amount last year. For the same periods, this year's expenditure was £1500 less. Ferry revenue fell by £100, as,compared with February, 1932. For the eleven months the revenue was £800 less than last year's, and the expenditure was £1150 less.
