THE MAUNGANUI

FURTHER DELAYED

STEWARDS SIGN OFF

The Union Company's liner Maunganui, which was to have sailed at 3 p.m. yesterday for San Francisco, via Earotonga and Papeete, has been further delayed by the trouble "with her stewards. After the first delay the xvessel was fixed to sail at 5 p.m. yesterday, but her departure was later postponed until noon today, and shortly before midday today it was put oft' until 3 p.m. Later, the time of departure was further postponed until 5 p.m. The stewards met in the Trades Hall this afternoon, but the result of the meeting was not known at the time of going to press. The trouble with the stewards arose, it is thought, over their objection to the chief steward, who . joined the vessel at Sydney. Late yesterday afternoon most of the- stewards lef£ the ship and were signed ofiy. only a few stewards: who had joined the ship at Wellington being not signed off. ' It is known that a call for stewards to sign on the Maunganui. this morning was without result. As a- rule' there are plenty of stewards about the waterfront looking for work,, but because of the seasonal exodus of ships from New Zealand with produce for overseas there are fewer stewards than usual offering. It is almost impossible to say when the Maunganui will sail. The Maunganui is a most important mail steamer, as, with the Makura, she maintains the Sydney-Wellington-San -Francisco servico and always carries a large American and English mail. The Maunganui will be unable to make up the time on the run. However, the postal officials state they arc hopeful of connecting with' the mail liners for England from America.
