DEWAR SHIELD CONTEST
WON BY WELLINGTON
The second, and last, electric light sports meeting of the season was held on the Basin Keserve on Saturday night. Several thousand people attended the meeting, which was one of the best held this year, and in spite of occasional showers of rain stayed until the last event had been rim. Two present and two past national champions competed, Hiss Jv^orrua Wilson and Miss T. Kench, both Dominion representatives at the' Olympic Games, running in the ladies' sprints, and J. Wade (Wanganui), present triple cycling champion, and 1\ Grose, ex-champion, riding in the three main cycling races. E. Ulmer, the local champion, also competed in the cycling events. Competition for the Dewar Shield this season was completed with the running off of nine events on Saturday evening. The Wellington Club are the winners, with Athletic Club runners-up. At the commencement of the evening's sports Wellington were leading from Olympic Club with SO points to 18, both teams having won 18 points at a Shield meeting at Petone some time ago, and Wellington laving won 12. points in two field events staged recently at.the provincial meeting. The following are the points scored in the competition:—Wellington 36, Athletic 35, Olympic 30, University IS, Kiwi 15, Miramar 12, Petone 10, College Old Boys 9, and Hutt "9. The highest number of points scored on Saturday was 24 by Athletic, University being next with 18. There was also a stirring contest for the coveted Heenan Baton^ which was run in conjunction with the one mile interelub relay. Kiwi, holders, retained the trophy against a challenge by the Olympic Club. At the end of the first lap (SSO yards) Olympic were leading by 20 yards from Kiwi, W. Ogg having put them in a strong position. Kiwi, however, made up some of the leeway by a fine run by L. C. Veitch, and over the last two laps opened up a ten-yard break on Olympic which was not reduced. Before the meeting a grand parade was held, headed by the Scots.- College Pipe Band. As a result "the "Kiwi Club were awarded the Kitto Shield, liaving won 55 points in this competition. The Kiwi team's appearance was excellent, their goofl, and their bearing an example to other clubs. Henderson (V.), 2; D. MeKenzie (S.H.), 3. Time, 2min 0 3-osee. Ogg "opened a break of syds in the last lap and had no difficulty in holding his own. 440 yds Junior.—B. Half-mile Walk.—A. Fraser (V.), 1- H. Eade (V.), 2; J. Thompson (V.), 3. Time, 3mm 20sec. The Olympic team, the only other competitors, scratched, and the event, originally, a mile, was altered to a half-mile. Fraser won by about 40yds without being pressed at any stage. The polo vault, for which Olympic were the only entrants, was not competed for. Half-mile Cycle.—First race: J. Wade (Wang.), 1; F. Grose (Cant.). 2; E. Ulmei- (College Old Boys), 3. Time, 71sec. Wade led all the way. Grose went through a bunched field with a furlong to go, but could not catch the Dominion champion, who wonp by a length. Second race: O. Disley (A.). 1; G. Clark (Pe.), 2; C. 'Flett (W.), 3. Time, 70 2-osec. Won by half a length, without being headed. Third race: R. Lyster (A.), 1; J. Howe (Pe.), 2; J. King (Pe.), 3. Time, 69 2-5 sec. Howe had led three-quarters of the distance when Lyster came through with a strong spurt and won by two lengths. One Mile Cycle.—First race: F. Grose (Cant.), 1; J. Wade (Wang.), 2; E. Ulmer (College Old Boys), 3. Time, 2min 20 1-5 sec. Grose and Ulmer were together at the bell, but at the furlong Wade put on a. length break. Gross came through on the inside in the straight in a great burst and won by inches; he fell heavily when his cycle slipped. Second race: O. Disley (A.), 1; G. Staveley (O.), 2;' C- Clark (Pe.), 3. Time, 2min 29 4-ssec. Disley made a fast run in the bell lap, and won by half a length. Third race: J. Howe (Pe.), 1; R. Lyster (A.), 2; J. King (Pe.), 3. Time, 2min 22 2-ssee. Won by half a length.
Three Mile Cycle.—First race: F. Grose (Cant.), 1; E. Ulmer (College- Old Boys), 2; J. Wade (Wang.), ,3. Time, 7min 25 3-ssec. At the end of the first mile Sowerby (A.), led from Wade; at the end of the second Ulmer led Wade. With half a. mile to go Grose bad taken charge from a bunched field. Wade went up at the bell, holding Grose by half a length, but then Grose produced a wonderful sprint and held a short break, beating Ulmer home by a wheel, Wade putting in hard work and finishing a similar distance back third on the outside.
