AUCKLAND, March 19,
A daring escape from the police lockup at Kawene was followed by exciting incidents before the capture of the fugitive, a Maori, Tei Henare, aged 20 years, held on remand on a charge of forging and uttering.
The Maori escaped from the cell by cutting a hole in one of the wooden walls. Evidently at some time he had picked up a piece of iron and a file and secreted them in the cell. With the file he manufactured a rough chisel out of the iron, and with this made a hole in the wall. The chisel and filo were found in the cell.
It is believed that Henare escaped about 3 a.m. yesterday, and his absence was not known until about 7 a.m. A search was conducted .throughout the day.
Last evening Constable Holt encountered Henare at Matukorei, where he was previously arrested. After a violent struggle Henare escaped. Later he secured a rifle and allegedly threatened the constable, and eventually escaped. The constable again saw Henare at Kohukohu, two miles away, at midnight, and with assistance he arrested the fugitive.
