DISPLAY OF PORK

AWARDS AT SMITHFIELD

(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, February 9. ■ The High Commissioner (Sir Thomas Wilford) and Mr. S. M. Bruce (representing Australia) attended the annual Empire Pork Show at Smithfieltl Central Markets. This is usually arranged by Messrs. Simons and Swain at Christmas time, but owing to late killing the function was postponed. A great deal of work was undertaken by the ■ company's staff in decorating the three shop fronts at the market with green foliage. Indeed, so thickly was this arranged that not a trace of the front or the interior was visible. Over the foliage the carcasses and joints were arranged. On the left were, the produce from New Zealandon the right that from Australia- and in the centre, most tastefully displayed, vrere the carcasses sent for competition by the Southland Boys' and Girls' Agricultural Club of New Zealand.

Mr. L. Zwanenberg, the- Master of the Worshipful Company of Butchers, and the Deputy Master (Mr. F; Bonser) were present in their robes, and other specially invited guests were Mr E. S. Forsyth, Sir Gordon Campbell, Sir Philip Procter, and other prominent members of the trade.

Although the decorations and the display were available for inspection only throughout the day, a permanent record was taken by many photographers and by a Topical Gazette Company. The Master of the Butchers' Company, in welcoming the guests, said that it seemed very fitting that he, in his official capacity, should have the privilege of awarding the prizes gained by a competition for pigs among the sons and daughters of New Zealand farmers. These , pigs, having been judged for prizes alive at the Invercargill Winter Show in New Zealand, had been killed and shipped to this country, where they had been judged in their several classes by experts in London, and now here they were to bo seen in an attractive display.

"Sir Thomas Wilforcl, as Hi^h Commissioner for New Zealand," said the Master, "we herewith hand you the prizes for the young members "of this juvenile agricultural club, and hope that the bonds o£ the Empire will be more firmly cemented thereby, and that every encouragement will be given to these children's'agricultural clubs to continue, and inci-caso."

Mr. Bruce, replying, said that the exhibition served not only to bring out the efficiency of the producers, but what I was probably .-more important, to show what the- consumers in this country really wanted and not what the producers thought they wanted. There were, very great opportunities in Australia for further developing the pig industry, especially baconers,- as these would not come into competition with the Home producers.

Sir Thomas Wilford congratulated all concerned with- the wonderful display in connection with a trade in which the people of New Zealand took the greatest interest.

Prizes were then presented to those representing the various successful firms. The High Commissioner handed to Mr. E. S. Forsyth the certificates and prizes awarded to the Southland boys and girls.
