"As far as imported goods are concerned there is no such thing as a. 5 per cent, sales . tax," an.. Invercargill merchant informed the y "Southland Times." "The sales tax actually ranges from 7{ per cent, to 12J per cent." It was not generally realised, he said, that _ the .sales tax'had to be paid on the value of . the goods after exchange and duty had~been added, and that meant 7i per cent, on free importations and 9J per cent, where the duty was 20 per cent, which was about the average. The tax would range up to 11J per cent, on British goods and from 11 3-8 to 12J per cent, on foreign importations.
