AUSTRALIAN EXPORTS. \ The competition of Australia, with its increasing butter production and lower price, is acutely felt by. New Zealand; The board s reports show augmentations this season (August 1 to February 28) in its record of Australian exports of butter to the United Kingdom, and the position is as follows:— • . Butter exports ....... 70,335 57,204 Cheese exports '3,907 2,164 Australia, it should be remembered, has the advantage; of the Paterson scheme, by which an artificially enhanced local price is used to compensate exporters for lower free on- board values; also Australia has a valuable butter trade with the Far East and Netherlands Indies. Argentine butter exports to the United Kingdom are declining, and for the period in review (August 1 to February 28) show a decline of from 10,657 tons.last year to 7880 for this'year. ■.: From these- three sources of supply of butter to the United Kingdom for. the month of: February only'this year 22,053 tons were exported, compared with 19,028 tons last year, Australia showing by far the greater increase. • • BRITISH IMPORTS. In January and February of this year Great Britain imported 68,594 tons of butter from all countries, the chief being as follows:— / Denmark, 17,240 tons; Australia, 21,236; New Zealand, 22,202; Argentine, 286. The Irish Free State contributed but 83 tons for January and February, compared with 191 tons for the corresponding months of 1932. . ■ -. _ New Zealand -leads in the British imports of cheese for the two' months in review, providing 20,826 tons out of a total of 24,090 tons, of which Ca'dada ' (winter months) contributed only. 181 tons. ... ■ . . BUTTER RE-EXPORTS. .The British re-export trade in butter is of particular interest to New Zealand, as a fair quantity of butter sent to the United Kingdom is sent elsewhere. During the month of February 362 tons only were re-exported, as against 3869 tons in February of 1932. This trade may be regarded as now nominal on the showing of the above returns. -; THE STOCK POSITION. The board's advices of estimated stocks of butter and cheese as at March 1 this year, with estimates of March 1, 1932, in parentheses, are as follows:— • All butters in London and provincial stores and undischarged vessels, 25,550 tons (16,500); stocks in New Zealand and afloat, 40,032 tons (32,587). Cheese, New Zealand, Canadian, and Australian combined in United Kingdom, 12,696 tons (14,319); stocks in New Zealand and afloat, 35,036 tons (30.424). Total cheese in sijjht 47,732 tons (44,743). - THE MARKETSvTODAY, Joseph Nathan and Co., Ltd., have received from their principals, Trengrouse and Nathan, Ltd., London, the following cabled advice, dated March 15:—"New Zealand butter. 79s per ewt; New Zealand cheese, white 445, coloured 50s. Both markets are quiet but firm with good demand." ■ ,■ >■ . A. H. Turabull and Co., Ltd., have received cabled advice.from their principals, W. Weddel and Co:i Ltd., London, March 15, as follows:—"Danish • butter, 98s per ewt; New Zealand finest, 76s to 70s; 'Kangaroo* (Australian), 74s to -775. Market ■ steady.: "New Zealand white cheese, 43s to 44s per ewt; New Zealand coloured, 49s to 51s. Market firm." . The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency .Company, Limited, has received •the following advice from its London house, dated March 15:—"Butter, New Zealand choicest salted, 78s per ewt. Cheese, white, 43s to 44s per ewt. Cheese., coloured, 49s per ewt. Market firm."
