THEFT OF JEWELLERY
YOUNG WOMAN IN TROUBLE
Vehemently declaring that she was only doing so on the advice of the arresting detective, Dorothy Sharman, described on the charge sheet as a domestic, aged 32, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court today to two charges of theft, of jewellery and a costume, of a total value of £10.
Detective-Sergeant Revell said that in January the accused rented a room from a Sirs. Thomas. She left after a few weeks and after her departure Mrs. Thomas discovered that a gold bangle and two gold rings were missing. The accused was seen by Detective Burke, and admitted stealing the jewellery and selling it to a dealer, but when Detective Burke reached the dealer's he found that the jewellery har been melted down.
About the same time, Detective-Sergeant Revell went on, the accused went to a Miss Hayes and asked for the loan of two nightgowns. Miss Hayes lent her the key of her room, and after the accused had been there she found that a costume had gone. The accused was a single woman. She had been before the Court on previous occasions .
The accused: On one occasion, please. Detective-Sergeant Revell: In 1031 she was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for vagrancy and six months for false pretences, the sentences to be concurrent. She has been living a very loose life in Wellington recently, booking in at various boarding-houses and clearing away without paying. "No, I have admitted my guilt, and I'm prepared to pay my price," declared the accused when asked by Mr. E. Page, S.M., if she had anything to say. Remarking that the accused had twice previously been convicted and that the probation officer did not recommend probation, the Magistrate ordered her to be detained for reformative purposes for two years. On the second charge the accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within two years.
