NGAIO AFFAIRS

DISTRICT IMPROVEMENTS

A meeting oE the Ngaio Progressive Association was held last evening, Mr. H. TL Cummings presiding. A deputation from- the Ngaio Tennis Association consisting .of Messrs. N. D. Macieod. and J. Kennedy made representations on the subject of tennis courts, on the Wellington City Council's reserve at Ngaio. Mr. Macieod said the Tennis Association was of the opinion that the proposed site on the boundary was' not a suitable one because of trees and a stream there, and there was only room , for two courts, which would not be adequate for the, future requirements of the district; He was of the opinion that a central position, which was-then, vacant, would be more suitable and .possibly, give, space for three courts. . ... The chairman said that the Wellington City Council had. asked that the central area be retained, and . they did not wish to touch that area. The only question was whether the site on the boundary line of the reserve was large enough. He promised to -obtain scaled "plans of the site recommended. •■> : A letter has been sent to the Town Clerk stating that a considerable number of footpaths in the district require re-metalling; and that in some cases they need building up, on account of damage: by recent heavy rains! Last November sin'icssfiil representations were made'to the City Council for an' overlapping tramway section from Thorndon . terminus to Johnston Street, and a'letter has been sent ■to the Khandallalr Association thanking them for their support in the matter. -The association is now making, attempts to have the ls 6d concession card used on this section instead of the cash fare as at present. It was felt .that more; revenue would be" received ih this way,,'as the present system of paying 2d a section .favoured the casual traveller. ■--.'■■- The following works have been recommended to the City Council for attention this year:—Raising, of level. of. Awarua Street at the corner, of Ottawa Road; cutting back of bank up to the boundary line at the first corner in Imlay Crescent; improvement' of lighting in Trelissick Crescent and Kenya Street; widening of Colllngwood Street opposite Town Hall to allow parking of cars; and general improvement of footpaths and street in Abbott Road... .
