RIFLE SHOOTING

NATIONAL MEETING BELT MATCHES FINDING THE CHAMPION Several spectacular scores were made in the series' of • belt matches which were continued at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting at Trentham yesterday. Five possibles were registered at 500 yards in the Wellington Match, and four in the Taranaki Match, which was fired late in the afternoon at 800' yards. The shooting-conditions during the morning were all that could have been desired and most competitors fired well at the 300 and 500 yards ranges. When they moved back to the 600 yards range for the completion of the Wellington Match in the afternoon, however, a choppy wind made accurate shooting very difficult. Firing at 800 yards, which commenced shortly before 5 o'clock, was rendered considerably easier by the dropping of the wind. During the latter part of the afternoon the sun shone brilliantly and " pleasantly warmed the competitors without dazzling them. CHAMPION'S BAD LUCK. . The principal surprise of the day was the failure of E. H. Nicholl, the present New Zealand champion, in the two matches fired at 600 yards. The possibles in both these matches were 50. In the first he scored 40 and in the second only 39. His rifle had been giving him trouble, so he changed it before firing off a match with H. L. Mason, who tied with him on Wednesday in the first, belt match, to decide who should .hold the King and Henry Trophy. This match between the two riflemen consisted of a compulsory sighter and three shots at 600 yards. Nichol won the trophy by one point. The cards were:—Nicholl (3)., 5, 4 5. Mason (4), 4,5,4. Although this was not a" sufficient test to indicate a return to, form, Nicholl registered a creditable 48 in the Taranaki Match, which was fired at 800 yards. His misfortune in the Wellington ancl Hawke's Bay Matches, however, will have a serious effect on his chances of retaining his title. FOUR MORE POSSIBLES. The Taranaki Match, the last event of the day, resulted in some excellent scores which rivalled the record established in the morning when five possibles- were scored in .the Canterbury Match (300 yards). In the Taranaki Match possibles were scored by B. Dunn (Upper Hutt), E. C. Barkle (Petone), Cadet K. F. Wakefield, and AY. (Gisborne). Cadet WakefiekL, who is a pupil of the Mount Albert Grammar School, has also distinguished himself by gaining second prize in the Wellington Match (B grade). Captain AY. JS\ Masefield also experienced a setback yesterday at the COO yards range. AVhen the result of the Trentham Aggregate, comprising the first four belt matches, was • announced, several of the ex-champions held leading positions. E. S. King, who won the title in 1928, was first with 289 points. H. V. Croxton, 1920 champion. King (Opaki), Captain H. Smimonds, 1924 champion, and C. J. Nix (Featherston) all tied for second place with totals of 287. Captain Masefield and AY. H. Ballinger were placed eighth and tenth respectively with totals of 284. Cadet AVakefield, who was placed eighteenth in the aggregate, had a total of 280. • . THE LADY COMPETITOR. Although she has not yet succeeded in getting into any of the prize lists, Mrs. J. T. Lovell, the only woman competitor at the meeting, has been shooting very consistently, and her scores exceed those of many of the men. The following are her scores at the various distances fired over yesterday, the maximum in each case being 50; 300 yards, 43; 500 yards, 47----600 yards (two matches), 35 and 39- 800 yards, 43. In the 800 yards match Mrs. Lovell finished with four bulls. The AVellington Match (ten rounds at--500 and 600 yards) was won easily by W H. Ballinger, of Petone, who just missed possibles at both ranges and finished with a. total of 96. His shooting on the 600 yards range was particularly good, as he was contending against adverse ' conditions. The runner-up, F. Bowes, of Auckland, made 96. The Hawke's Bay Match (GOO yards) ™s. C. J. Nix, of Featherston, with it. H. James (Napier), third. The following are the results of matches completed after "The Post" went to press yesterday:— WELLINGTON MATCH.
