PORIRUA ACTIVITIES

A most enjoyable picnic was recently held by the Porirua branch of the Women's Institute, at the beautiful bush owned by Mr. Prosser, which was kindly lent for the occasion. Games, races, and competitions engaged the skill of the members and friends in keen competition. . Prizes, which had been generously donated by Mrs. Vickers, were presented by Mrs. Ryan to the winners. Everyone was delighted with this first picnic of tho Porirua Institute under such ideal conditions and amidst such beautiful surroundings. EXHIBITION OF ARTS AND CRAFTS. The February meeting of the Porirua Women's Institute took the form of an exhibition of arts and crafts. Miss Maddever declared the exhibition open, and complimented the members on their work. Mrs. Vickers thanked Miss Maddever, and presented her with a beautiful handkerchief made by Mrs. Renwick. Several articles had been lent by various people, including a rug, by Mrs. McDonald made from waste wool; a tapestry rug, by Mrs. Renwick; and one made from old pieces of material, the work of Mrs. Dawson. These were much. admired. A silk Paisley shawl, stated to be over one hundred years old, exhibited by Miss Maddever, came in for special attention. Many other exhibitß of members' home crafts Bhowed the keen interest taken ia the institute movement. There were also cake and scone competitions. Mrs. Huckstepp won with a sponge cake: Mrs, Jicker.s, jsecpnd, Mrs, Teague

was first for scones; Mrs. Colley, second. A cushion given by Mrs. Helliwell was won by Miss B. Martin. Mrs. Byan and Mr. Benwick were responsible for the musical programme. The serving of tea brought the proceedings to a close.
