SYNOPSIS OF LAST 48 HOURS.

The series of westerly depressions which has been moving past the southern portion of New Zealand ceased last night and a considerable rse of pressure has taken-place. The principal cause of the change is a tropical cyclone which has been travelling southwards from the Tonga Group. On Saturday, strong squally north-west to westerly winds' prevailed, but they decreased somewhat during yesterday. This morning wind 3 are mainly light and variable. The weather has been for the most part fine in districts east of the main ranges from Canterbury northwards. Elsewhere it has been very variable with rain at times, in most places. Heavy falls have again occurred In the Southern Alps, South. Westland, and the Fiord country, rivers being in fresh. Further thunderstorms were reported from southern parts'of the South Island.
