SPECTACULAR EVENTS

KEY IN FORM

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 26. Spectacular cinder track racing, which included a series of close finishes and a number of spills, was witnessed by a crowd of over 600Q—the largest of the season— at the final broadsiding meeting at the Western Springs Speedway last evening. The most successful rider was N. Key, of England, who defeated W. Phillips, also of England, in the final of the New Zealand open championship and Span Cup series. Key later won the match rate against Phillips. W. Kihnistcr came to grief in the first, event, and did not ride again. He started from the outside position, with A. Mattson, Auckland, on the, inside, and R. Tauser, America, in the centre. At the start Tauser and Kilmister beat Mattsou into the first bend, but the local man was first out of the corner, and had a clear lead on the back straight. Tauser's machine bumped Kilmister's, forcing the Wellington mail against one of the gates, which was not completely closed. Kilmister was unseated, and his machine was damaged extensively. He was offered other mounts, but could not find one suitable, and bo did not appear again. The racing was of a high order, and times were particularly fast. Results: — New Zealand Open.
