ATHLETICS

By "Sprinter" '■ PROVINCIAL TITLES

CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS

REVIEW OF PROSPECTS

FIXTURES. February 20, Poneke Club's Evening Meeting, Basin Eeserve; February 25, Provincial Championships, Basin Beserve; February 27, Old Boys' Club's Evening Meeting, Basin Beserve; March 4, Electric Light Meeting, Basin Beserve;, Wanganui, Kiwi, and Wellington Clubs'(club and open events); March 18, Dewar Shield Meeting, under electric light, Basin Beserve.

Although the general' standard of performances at the Dewar Shield meeting at Petone on Saturday -was not high, it was not poor. There was some keen competition and several excellent achievements, notably C. H. Jenkins's sprinting, a good steady quarter-mile by W, Ogg, and the hop, step and jump of 46ft 9£in by L. Sehneideman. Two of the three cycling championships provided, close finishes; in the other B. Ulmer, who unfortunately was suffering from, influenza, had the race to himself. At the present time T. Boe and L. Sowerby (who seems to be in tiptop, form) are, turner's most dangerous rivals, but Ulmer, in form, appeals as being too good, for the other two. Form, at the meeting, a consideration of the results at.the HawkVs Bay^Poverty Bay " Sub-centre championships, and a run through the showings of Wairarapa competitors, supply a rough idea of prospects for the provincial championships, to, be ; decided on the Basin Reserve on Saturday morning and afternoon next. Although a Wairarapa re-port-early invthe week stated that the Wair, arapa and Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay Sub-centres;would not be sending teams, other advice is that there will be a team from Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay, and that there will be representatives on hand from the Wairarapa. Performances at the championships will have a bearing on the selection of the Wellington team for the New. Zealand championship meeting at Christehurch on March 10 and 11^ Mr. A. C. Kitto, with Mr. Norman McKenzie (Napier) as associate, has been appointed to select, the 'athletes, and' Mr. A. Matson is the cycling selector. ■' . - . A.Potted Review. '. Indications point to a number of titles changing hands at the provincial meeting. For the 100 yards and 440 yards junior championships the outstanding runner is 0. Bobinson (Kiwi Club). On heir form to date Miss T. Kench probably will find difficulty in retaining the 100;. yards ladies' championship, ' with Miss N. Wilson (Gisborne) and Misses" G. Symes and M. Lean, of Hastings, in the field. The! hoidef-of the ohe'inile title is G. Bayne,: who,has turned professional and is in Australia"! o.' Gibbons (Wellington Olub) and P. Wilson (Olympic) appear to be the most likely candidates. No trouble should be experienced by C. H. Jenkins in retaining both sprint titles, but the competition for the minor places may be interesting. There does not appear to be .anyone good enough to beat W. Ogg in the half-mile, but if he starts in the 440 yards as well, he might find strong opposition in this event coming from H. Nairn. (Dannevirko) and J. B: Stephenson (University); True, Ogg beat Stephenson on Saturday, at Petone,'.but with a little more work Stephenson gave the impression of being a runner to reckon with at the provincial meeting. G. O. Prosser, holder of the three miles title, has been off the' scene, and it seems that either 0. Gibbons or D. Pedersen-should have a good chance of winning- the . event. Becent performances point to the Kiwi Club winning the one mile* medley relay, and' the Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay team the ladies', relay.: The 120 yards an* 440 yards hurdles titles are held by two Hawke 's Bay-Poverty Bay athletes, Holderness aid' Leach, respectively, but both were beaten in their anticentre championships, last Saturday. F. Sharpley (Hastings) and B. Callinan (Napier) •were the •winners. At the prpvincial meeting. Sharpley and Callinan may find J. McDonald (Wellington), in the shorter event, and B. McLeod (Miramar), in the 440 yards hurdles, hard nuts to crack. The 80 yards ladies' hurdles title probably will pass to Miss Tong (Hastings), and the winner of the ladies' high jump may be found1, to be Miss M. Turton (Napier). If Miss-Young, of Motueka, however, is on hand, she, should be a strong contender. The half-mile and one mile walk titles look safe for I. Driscoll (Danne'virko), although he may find some opposition from B. Fraser (University). Turning to the field events, the indications point to P. Munro winning onco again the shot and discus titles. T. Crowe is the present holder of the high jump title. In form he should win again, although Chadwick, a Napier athlete, is reported to be a good man. F. Bradey has not been competing regularly, but it is' on the cards that he may : be a coinpejtitor. both in the high jump and the pole vault. The holders of the pole vault title are -two Wairarapa athletes, W. H. Eoberts and B. Boberts, who cleared the bar at 10ft 6in last year,- There does not appear to be anyone likely \o deprive B. Griffiths (Lower Hutt) of his javelin title. As; ♦for the long jump title, the strongest contenders should.be T. Crowe and L. Schneideman. .If 'he compotes, W. Harvey (Wairarapa) should be able to retain the hammer-throwing title, but .in the event of his absence it should go ■to J. McHolin.'D. Parata, present hop, step, and ■ jump champion, will find Sehneideman and Crowe hard to beat. .-'APorS the cycling championships, the three local riders showing best form are Ulmer, Boe, and Sowerby. Of the others, C. Button (Napier) may be found to-be the strongest opponent,' 1 He rode partieu]arly'\w<?n at the Hawke's Bay-Pbv-' "qrty Bay, meeting. ;•'. ;'\ s General Notes. . •':'?> -Vv The second;.Dewar Shield meeting of the season'js-.to be Jjeld;under electric light1 aKthe Basin Beserve on March 18. The hamnjor and .discus events in the; Competition, howover, will be decided ■at the1 Old Boys'. Club, evening meeting on February 27. ■. :",\-. ' For the combined Wanganui, Kiwi, and Wellington Clubs' meeting on the Basin Ecserve, on March 4, it is proposed to invite A. J. Elliot, the crack Auckland sprinter, to compete. ' On a fairly heavy track at the Tara-; naki Sub-centre's championship meet-! ing on Saturday, the Now Zealand champion, S.,A. Black,, won the 440 yards in 50 4-ssec, breaking Ms previous sub-cento record, It is of interest to note that S. A. Lay was a competitor;: and that ho broke his .sub-centro javelin record.
