Shocked by' the news that its antigang' crusading Mayor had been : shot, Chicago awaited, the outcome of the examination; of Mr. Cermakfs wounds wifh anxiety and hope. ~ ■■■■:-■:■■ The police continued their anti-gang drive, ordered by. the Mayor some time' ago. Squads were sent into underworld haunts in search of suspicious persons. Mr. Cermak ia 59 years old.. He rose, fromthe position of immigrant breaker,boy in an Illinois . coalmine to •■', the Mayoralty. He went to Florida:'last week to recuperate from a cold and con-' fer, with Mr.. Eoosevelt and his assoei-; ates on political land other matters. He is a Democratic national committeeman^ of Illinois.- ■" : '' -'' Ever since his^ elevation to the Mayoralty there have been /unverifiedreports that" he has -been the recipient of death threats, but officials did not; believe there was 'any possibility that they could have any connection with the1 Miami shooting.
