CITY OBSERVATORY
NEW BUILDING PROPOSED
TO COST £3000
After a long discussion, the.special Observatory Committee set up^ between! [the City Council and the New Zealand I Institute haa agreed upon the maia points for the development of the.citjj observatory at Kelburn, and the follow* ing proposals of the, committee ■were formally approved by the City Council last night:— - ' .^;: That the New Zealand Institute "b^ granted a lease in perpetuity, at » rental of Is per annum, if demanded, of a qnarter-acro section in the Botani- . cal Gardens, Kelburn, for the purposa of erecting thereon an observatory' at a «ost of approximately £3000. ■ ";. The New Zealand Institute shaQJ when it has secured the necessary; sanction by Act of Parliament, proce'ecl with the building, and shall purchase , from the City Council its telescope'at a price not exceeding £500. ■ " The governing body shall be the Car* ter Observatory Committee, and coin sist of five members, three being xc* presentatives of the New Zealand In« stitute as Carter trustees, one a repie* sentative of the "Wellington City Conn* cil as providing the site, and one representative f the New Zealand Astro> nomical Society as providing the staff and upkeep. ■ The telescope is to be available for the use of the public for at least on» ■ night a week at a small charge.to_W fixed by the Carter Observatory Corh.mittee from time to time. ' ■
