CONSUMPTION DROPS
POSITION AT AUCKLAND
AUCKLAND, This Day. A statement that since Monday petrol sales at service stations had dropped 50 per. cent, in the case of private cars, and 25 per cent, in the case of commercial cars was made at a meeting of tho Auckland Automobile Association. It was also stated that 4,000,000 gallons of power kerosene were entering the country and paying no tax. The chairman said he was informed that there was a possibility of a reduction in the tax being conceded. It was just a question whether they should trust to that chance or fight for the removal of the whole fivepence. In the discussion the opinion was expressed that if the 20 per cent, drop in consumption estimated by the Minister of Finance took place there would be a corresponding decrease in Customs revenue on motor vehicles, oil, tires, etc., and the upshot would be that the revenue would be increased very little. •' It was • decided to ask the petrol dealers to post up the actual price of petrol and also the tax on it.
