AUSTRALIA'S SHARE

'MILLION SQUARE MILES

ANTICIPATED VALUE

United Press Association—By Electric Tele- • craph—Copyright; MELBOURNE, February 15. The Minister of External Affairs, the Hon. M. Latham, announces that tho British Government, having obtained sovereign rights over the Antarctic territory lying immediately to tho south of Australia other than, Adelie Land, south of 60 degrees south, between 16Q degrees and 45 degrees east, had placed it under the control of the Commonwealth Government. The territory consists approximately of a million; square miles. Australia owes this new territory almost entirely to the exploratory genius, declared Mr. Latham, of Sir Douglas Mawson: The area had considerable actual and potential economic importance, being the scene of many whaling enterprises. There is also reason to believe that furbearing animals and some bird life couldbe developed economically. The Commonwealth will appoint a committee to report'upon the means of developing the resources of the new territory.•
