SALES TAX DISCUSSION

Yesterday in Parliament was devoted entirely to the second reading of the Sales Tax Bill. No Minister took part in tho discussion, the outstanding speeches being those of the ex-Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Downie Stewart) and Mr.. M. J. Savage, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. At the outset, it seemed as if the Government back benchers were boycotting th 3' debate, the only Coalition speaker in the afternoon being Mr. Downie Stewart. After the dinner adjournment,;however, Government speakers joined ,in, the trend of their speeches being thac the Government was justified in. imposing the sales tax in order to Assist the.Bndget. During tho debate the' speakers were Messrs. C. A. Wilkinson. (Independent, Egmont), H. G. B. Mason (Labour, Auckland Suburbs), M. J. Savage (Lahonr, Auckland West), C. Hi Chapman (Labour, -,' Wellington North), J. O'Brien (Labour, Westland), W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier), the Hon. W. Downie Stewart (Government, Dunedin West), J. McCombs (Labour, Lyttelton), A. Harris (Government, Waitemata),; W. Nash (Labour,.Hutt), A. E. Jull ((Government, Waipawa), R. Semple (Labour, Wellington East), H. S. S. Kyl.e (Government, Riccarton), F_ i_, Schramm (Labour, Auckland East), A. Stuart (Government, Rangitikei), C. Carr (Labour, Timaru), and A. J. Stallworthy (Independent, Eden).
