' vice-president. She held that position un- 1 til her health prevented her taking a fur- 1 ther active part. _ ; The late Mrs. S. Kirkcaldie joined the committee of the 'society in November, i 1909, and in the following April took of- , fice as honorary treasurer. She remained on the committee of the Wellington branch until 1923 and* then founded the sub-corn- ' mittee in Karon, afterwards becoming its president until 1929, whe^she relinquished office. Mrs. Kirkcaldie gave twenty years bt devoted service to, the Plunket movement, and her spirit of "service before self" and her altruism -have'been supreme. Associated with'her was her.Husband', (one of the original members s of $lie, Advisory Board, of which he is still- a -tnember). Their unflagging-interest'and generosity to the work has been one of ;the big factors in the growth from a smallf'strugglmg.body employing one nyrse to a big,-branch with twelye nurses .and a■ Karitaiie_Hospital. King Kari--5 tano Hospital reported:—Admissions for _ December and January, 21 mothers and C 41 babies; discharged, 20 mothers and 38 > babies. The length of'stay of''mothers J averaged 'seven days, and of-.babies ,_» C days.-Six premhture babies-were adimt- _ ted; one died, and the others are^all dop ing well. Two pairs of twins 'were adS mitted with their mothers. Mothers and _ babies were admitted from Lower Hutt, C Pahiatua, Wellington and suburbs.
