STEAMER WITHDRAWN
NORFOLK ISLAND SERVICE
RESULT OF FRUIT EMBARGO
V (By. Telegraph.—Press Association.) :. ':' AUCKLAND, February 14. Asa. result of the New Zealand Government's embargo on Australian fruit. Burns, Philp, and Co., Ltd., have'withdrawn the passenger steamer /Morinda i rom the Norfolk Island-Auckland service. ' _"■." ■". There will be no direct steamer service between Auckland- and Norfolk Island, whence used to come a considerable portion of Auckland's supply of bananas, early toniatoes, early. kumeras, and other fruit and-vegetables.
First the Hinemoa and later the Maui Pomare, both Governmeht - steamers, made regular trips between Norfolk Island and Auckland. After the Maui Pomare was withdrawn the -Hikurangi entered the service for- some months, but was also withdrawn. - When the Morinda first took up the running her route was from Sydney to Auckland, via Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island, and she called at the islands on her return journey. During recent trips the Morinda has also called at the New Hebrides on her return voyage. The passenger trade to Auckland from these islands was always small, and now that Norfolk Island produce is taxed under the Australian embargo the service has of necessity been suspended. ■
