DEARER READING
BOOK PRICES GO UP
Another effect of the higher exchange rate is the, raising of the prices of all'imported books, which is equivalent to-saying that the greater part of the reading matter bought by people in the Dominion already costs them more. The retail price of books printed and published outside New Zealand and imported into the. country, has been raised, sixpence being added to the price of the cheaper books and a shilling or more to the more expensive ones. A novel, for instance, which a week ago could be purchased for 3s 6d, now costs 4s, and a book previously priced at 6s now carries a 7s label.
Alarm has been expressed in some quarters lest school books should cost more, too, but it is pointed out that as these are for the most part produced in New Zealand, the prices at present are not likely to be changed.
