SETTLERS IN PERIL
DAMAGING FLOODS
HIGHWAY BLOCKED
WIDE AREA AFFECTED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
BLENHEIM, This Day.
Phenomenal rain has fallen in the back country all round Marlborough during the last two days. The Rai Valley reports 10.48 in for the 30th and 9.68 in yesterday, making a total of 20.14 in in 60 hours in that district. Fences have been swept away, and many of the residents have been compelled to evacuate their homes and take refuge on haystacks and the roofs of outbuildings.
Very few suppliers were able to reach the factory this morning/ In other eases settlers have been unable to milk, owing to the depth', of water. The Blenheim-Nelson highway is completely blocked by the floods at .Canvastown, Eai Valley, and elsewhere. The Ronga bridge is believed to have been swept away, but the report is unconfirmed. A swing bridge at Mr. P. Neil's place disappeared, and another at Mr. G. Wratt's place is in a precarious position.
It is still raining on the Wairau plains. The river is in heavy flood, but the banks are standing the test. The Morrin's Hollow overflow is functioning perfectly and carrying at least eight feet of water. ■■—,
A big gang of men is working at the Wairau bar-driving a new cut in the boulder bank. .
