CARRIER RISKS HIS LIFE
(From Our Own Correspondent.) .' NELSON, 31st January. ■ Jiiv elderly woman,. Mrs. Hodges, of 10, Gioye Streetj was:at the rear of her property, which' adjoins the bank of the Maitai Biver, attempting to collect pieces'of wood as they floated past oil the flood waters, when she fell in, but fortunately Mr. H. G. Williams,, carrier,- of -54, Nile street, happened to be on the. Collingwodcl street bridgej about 200 yds above the place, and promptly drove down to the Trafalgar street bridge in a desperate «£- ---fort to reach there in time to save her. On his reaching the bridge he saw that Mrs. Ilodgeshad been swept past, but he rushed down the bank and dived into the fast-flowing swollen .waters. After a hard. swim he was able to ' reach her and successfully brought her to the bank near the. tanneries some fifty yards below the bridge. By his courageous action Mr. Williams saved the life of Mrs. Hodges, who otherwise must have been swept out to sea.
