RACING AT WAIROA

OPENING DAY TO-MORROW

SOME-HORSES IN FORM

Fields of somewhat better than average dimensions have been accepted for the first day of the .Wairoa Bacing Club's Annual Meeting on" the club's course at Te Kupenga to-morrow, and the "racing should be interesting. Several horses who raced at Greenmeadows on Saturday are engaged, so that there is a fair line to form in most of the events. The horses from Gisborng had racing at ■Poverty Bay on Boxing Day.

■" The meeting will be concluded on .Saturday. The racing on each day is due to commence at 12.45 p.m..

The main item to-morrow is the Wairoa "Handicap, whose prospective, field of ten ia very much larger than what customarily. has paraded for the race. The consistent Valsier, who won the main handicap recently at Poverty Bay, is likely to be oho o£ the principal selections, and. at ,§.7 he looks to be quite reasonably ' treated. ' ■He was very nar.ro'wly beaten; under '8.12 in last year's ■ race. His most dangerous opponents .-may ba. Tahoma, White Fang; and Royal Songster. Tahoma failed to see out the ; distance last Saturday, but two • years ago he won the Wairoa Cup, corresponding to this year's race, so that, well . handled,. the length of the trip should '. not be beyond him. Courageous, Wed* ; ding Bells, and the improving Bernera also hold prospects. There is no open sprint on the day's programme, the other event for the open h.andicappers being the Ormond Handicap, run over a mile. Most of the acceptors have the earlier engagement, but it is quite the thing for them , to' keep 'both. A new one in Kahunoke should .suited by this race, and, if he shows the form he did when brought down south a couple of months ago, he will take some "beating. Valsier, Royal Song-? ster, and Wedding Bells have probably ■the best form among the others. Falsa Scent, a much improved galloper, may also, 'prove that he can go a mile as well as sprints. ■•' - The. following are among-the horses who have recently shown form, and who should perform creditably:— ' Trial Handicap. — Bothwell and Admatha. .. , Clyde High-weight.—Manuiri. '. Wairoa Handicap.—Valsier and Tahoma, Te Kupenga Hack Handicap.—Stitch. ; Maiden Scurry.—Mercian Queen and Hine te Wai. Rauwa Hack Handicap.—Bob In and Wedding Bells.
