WOOLWORTHS' PICNIC
Woolworths (N.Z.), Ltd., held their annual picnic at Maidstone Park,' Upper Hutt, on Sunday. Fine weather made conditions ideal for the big event of the day, a cricket match between the Wellington branch^ and a team from the Auckland branch. Manyl New Zealand managers, executives, and their ■ wives were present; and luncheon was presided over by Mr. Theo. Kelly, general manager for New Zealand. ■'..-.
The cricket teams were very evenly matched, and a hard-fought game resulted in a thrilling finish, when, in failing light, Wellington won the match by two wickets.
Auckland scored 224 (Essex 133, Barrier 24, Robinson 25, MeCrystal 13, Bartley 10) and 186 (Essex 51, Bartley 40, Phillips 30," Noble 25 not out, Barrier 13).
Wellington totalled 28D (Robinson 116 Pickard 72, Rice 28, Cutts 22, Davies 20, Stewart 10, Brodie 10), and hit off the runs required to win for the loss of eight wickets (Prince 53, Cutts 17, Brodie 11 not out, Pickard 10, Stewart 8).
