A SALES TAX
GOVERNMENT'S PLANS
fiC ANNOUNCEMENT YET
As has been indicated previously, the imposition of a sales tax will probably form one of the main items in the Government's programme designed to place the finance^ of the country in a sounder position, but the leaders of the Government are refraining from making any announcement in the meantime. .
The Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. G. AY. Forbes), when asked to-day whether Cabinet had reached any decision in favour of a sales tax, said: "I cannot tell you."; The Prime Minister suggested that the question was hardly a fair one at the moment, and added that Cabinet was' making satisfactory progress with its legislative programme. The Minister of Finance (the Eight, Hon. J. G. Coates) was also reticent. W>en asked when the taxation Bills would be introduced, Mr. Coates satisfied himself with the remark: "They are coming along quite well."
