WELL-KNOWN GOLFERS
ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED
. An engagement of interest to golfers is that of Mr. Sloan Morpeth, youngest son of the late Mr.. H. D. Morpeth and Mrs. Morpeth, of Waihi and Wanganui, and Miss Helaine Claire (Susan), second daughter of the late "Mr. Alfred Tolhurst and Mrs. Tolhurst, of Shirley, St. Kilda, Melbourne. The engagement was announced in .Melbourne on Friday (states the "New Zealand Herald"). • Miss Susan Tolhurst holds a very strong position among the first women golfers of the world. She has twice held the Australian ladies' championship. She visited England last year and competed in the English ladies' championship. In it she defeated Miss Van Wie, who won the American ladies' championship a few months ago. She also defeated Miss Diana Fishwick, the well-known. English ex-cham-pion. -Miss Tolhurst was defeated in the semi-finals by Mrs. Clark, of Hampshire.
Mr. SEorpeth left New Zealand for Australia in. 1930 to take up the position, of secretary-manager of the Commonwealth Golf Club in Melbourne-. In addition, he recently became secretary of the Australian Golf Union. Before leaving New Zealand Mr. Morpeth was winner of the New Zealand open championship, was three times amateur champion, and was the winner of the Jellicbe Handicap at Hamilton. While on a visit to Australia prior, to taking up the position he holds he won the Victorian State championship and was-runner-up for the Australian 'amateur championship.
Miss Tolhurst visited New Zealand last year on her way to England, and spent a few days in Auckland playing on the Auckland links.
