PLUNKET SHIELD

AUCKLAND-WELLINGTON

HOME TEAM BATTING

parsloe; injured

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The Auckland-Wellington Plunket Shield cricket match was commenced at Eden Park to-day.

When Weii- beat James in the toss, Auckland took first strike on. a wicket which had rolled out well and looked as though it was made for runs. It was a few minutes after 11 o'clock when Wellington took the field, a light showsr just previously having driven the spectators on the terraces to shelter. There was another shower as the opening batsmen, Mills and Postles, went to the crease. Wellington's first pair of bowlers was Parsloe and Blundell. r ■■; ■ ■

It took Auckland- fifteen minutes to notch, double figures, and there was a murmur of approval when Mills left a rising ball from Parsloe outside the leg stump strictly alone. Bltmdell struck a better length in his fourth over, in which he -was no-balled. When Parsloe, who was sending down an occasional full toss, was bowling, James dropped ljaek to short stop. After getting an uppish stroke through the slip's off Parsloe, Mills hooked a ball off Blundqll hard, and. Parsloe, jumping, for a catch, hurt his right thumb and came off the field, Vivian fielding as substitute. Newman took Parsloe ?s place as bowler, and Mills glanced him for a brace and a single. The same batsman drove Blundell for the' first boundary of the match.

The score at noon was 36 for no wickets (Mills 23, Pos'tles 11, extras 2). At tho luncheon adjournment the score was none for 103 (Mills 58, Postles' 42).
