TROPHY GAMES

THE CLOSING MATCHES

Besides the Ordinary games at the Jfew/.Zealand jCliampiouship meeting a,t Miratnar [Grounds this morning, an effort was'begun to reach finality in tho postponed match between "Wellington and Canterbury for the Anthony Wilding. Memorial Shield ana the Nunneley Casket. In the Shield match, after the first day's play Wellington was leading by 5 matches to: 1, and in the Casket had the narrow lead of five games. N...R. C. Wilson brought Wellington's lead to 6-1 in the- Wilding Shield by a very sound victory over W. R. Robinson (Canterbury). Robinson, who has not revealed his trtie form, here, was no Wetter in his play, and Wilson was playing wjth great confidence and, despite occasional misses, was never in danger. He took the net whenever opportunity offered/ and rarely broke down when an important point was required. The match was over in a very short time. • One more win will give Wellington the Shield. '■• • • Miss E. Rudkin : (Canterbury) and Miss -M. Whyte had a long struggle in their Nunneley. Casket match. ' Miss Whyte opened badly and lost the first set to love,,being unable to find a length and having to suffer Miss Rudkin play her all over the court. The Canterbury girl's beautifully produced strokes and deep -drives gathered, in game after game, and Miss Whyte seemed unable to counter the mixed driving and chopping tactics employed against her. After the first set, however, she sharply improved, and won ten of tho next thirteen games, taking the second set 6-2 by spirited hitting, and leading 4-1 and 5-3 in the next. Miss Rudkin was playing the more accurately at the end of the match, but was lucky to escape defeat, for after having pluekily reached 5-all she was-givqn the benefit of an out ball when serving down the wind. Had Miss Whyte won the point the-score would have been 0-40 in her favour instead of 15-30, and she would have had her own service down wind to follow. Miss Rudkin finished off the match with a series of long exchanges from the baseline, in which she kept on attacking Miss Whyte's backhand. This stood up to the pressure remarkably well, and it was.only after a close fight that the Canterbury girl won. Miss D. Howe (Wellington) having beaten Miss M. Wake (Canterbury) in a championship match, which was also counted as a Casket game, the scores in the series remained Wellington 4, Canterbury 4, with four matches left to play. Mrs. D. G. France (Wellington) was too steady for Miss Poolc (Canterbury) in their Nunneley Casket match, winning 6-2, 6-2 after a long fight, which is not reflected in the scores. Miss Poole hit out courageously and took the net repeatedly, but played without' guile, and her speed was not enough to take her to victory, for Mrs. France was very steady. DETAILED. RESULTS. Wilding Shield. N. E. C. Wilson (Wellington) beat W. E. Eobinson (Canterbury), 6-1, 6-2. Nunnelley Casket. Miss D. Howe (Wellington) beat Miss M. Wako (Canterbury), 10-8, 6-1. Miss E. Rudkin (Canterbury) beat Miss M. Whyte (Wellington), 6-0, 2-6, 7*o. '
