UMPIRES CRITICISED.
COMPETENCE QUESTIONED
.Criticism "of some of the umpires controlling senior matches was made at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Cricket»Association last evening. • ■ . The chairman, Mr. P. B. Broad, said that two umpires who controlled matches in the last round before ! Christmas at the Basin Reserve were not up to senior standard. He had heard that the Umpires' Association appointed umpires on the TOta principle, and the Management Committee, in objecting to this, could make a.stand. The selections for senior matches were made from those who were regarded as first-class umpires, said Mr. R. F. Steele, the representative of the Umpires' Association on the Management Committee. In subsequent discussion, members declared that the Umpires' Association would state that if umpires had passed the necessary examinations they would be able to control senior matches. It was remarked that this would not work out in practice. Mr. Broad said that some men would never be senior umpires any more than some men playing in senior cricket could be called' senior, cricketers. Mr. A. M. Hollings said he could remember, criticism of the umpires .among players in the' match in question at the Basin Reserve. ■ The Management Committee's delegate to the Umpires' Association, Mr. A. Ronaldson, was empowered to discuss the matter with the umpires. Mr. Broad suggested that -the Umpires' Association should submit to the Management Committee the names of umpires'qualified to take senior games. The committee could then strike out the names of those whom it did "not want to control senior matches. AFTERNOON TEA QUESTION. The question of "• the afternoon tea adjournment for umpires was also raised. It was stated that some umpires claimed the right-to an adjournment for afternoon tea. '■■..•■ The ruling was given that an agreement had been made between the Management Committee and the Umpires' Association that in senior matches, and in junior matches where tea was ■ provided, there should be an adjournment, otherwise the afternoon tea adjournment could be taken subject to the captains of both sides agreeing. : ■ : " ' It was reported that the.Stop-Out Club had twice complained ofi, umpires not turning up for competition matches. The matter is to be taken up with the Umpires' Association. ' REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET CAPTAINIn place of Lowry, who is "not available, K. James was appointed captain of the Wellington tearu to' play Auckland next Saturday. Mr. R. F. Steele has been appointed manager of the team. It was stated that arrangements are being made for C. S. Dempster, the official coach, to take a colts' to Wanganui in February, preferably' toward the end of the month.
