Steps to cheek an age-old evil in India, namely, the forcible conversion of young men and women to asceticism, is likely to be taken shortly in the State of Baroda, The recommenda-1 tions include legislation to prevent persons under sixteen renouncing the world and in the case of married men and women assent must be given before a Magistrate. At present thousands of young men and women throughout India are living apart from the world as the result of pressure by religious chiefs who inculcate saintly ideas with threats of "eternal damnation."
