FIRE PRECAUTIONS

CONSTRUCTION OF LINERS

PARIS, 12th January. The Merchant Marine Commissions of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate have decided, in consequence of the destruction of the liners Georges Phillipar and L'Atlantique, that the use of wood must be forbidden in the staircases, gangways, and ceilings in all ships, and that no nitrocellulose paints and varnishes must be used. All carpets and awning., must be rendered fireproof. Electric cables and wires must bo covered with a casing of steel wire in order to obviate fire in cases of a short circuit. All steamers over 10,000 tons must be equipped with two independent wireless installations, and a fire brigade must be attached to big liners.
